⚖ Compare

Ferrari revealed the Mondial 8 at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show; it was the first Ferrari to deviate from the simple three-digit naming scheme. A mid-engined 2+2 coupe styled by Pininfarina, it was based on the 308 GTB but had a wheelbase extended by ten centimeters to 2650 mm and more interior space. The transversely mounted V8 with Bosch fuel injection came from the 308 GTBi/GTSi. It drew criticism for its performance, which some testers found too tame, and for its proportions: one journalist considered the car too long for its width.

Good to know

  • Traditionalists had never accepted Bertone on the 308 GT4; seven years later, Ferrari presented another Pininfarina design with the Mondial 8.
  • The name "Mondial" (World) recalled an earlier Ferrari race car.
  • With only 157 kW, it was one of the least powerful Ferraris and felt quite strained beyond 200 km/h.
  • Surprisingly, it sold no better than its predecessor, the 308 GT4.

Technical details

The transversely mounted V8 with mechanical Bosch K-Jetronic had no electronics, just a few relays for the cold-start sequence; a high-pressure pump constantly delivered fuel to the injectors. The engine was the same unit used in the 308 GTBi/GTSi, which had debuted in the Dino 308 GT4 of 1973. The suspension consisted of unequal-length double wishbones all around with Koni dampers. It was Ferrari's first low-emissions fuel-injected V8.

Criticism

Two aspects drew criticism. First were the somewhat awkward proportions: one journalist felt the Mondial was too long for its width. Second was that the car felt tame compared to other Ferraris. Press reports occasionally judged the performance figures to be relatively mild. Structurally, it was based on the two-seater 308 GTB, but like the GT4, it was a roomier 2+2; the wheelbase grew by ten centimeters, and the car was wider than its predecessors.
