⚖ Compare

The Mondial t, produced from 1988 to 1993, was the final evolution of the Mondial series and far more than a facelift. The "t" signifies the transverse gearbox layout paired with a longitudinally mounted engine—an architecture previously used on the 312T Formula 1 car driven by Niki Lauda. This allowed a longer engine to sit lower down, significantly improving handling. Visually, it can be identified by smaller air intakes, restyled door handles, and body-colored bumpers. Road & Track called it the spearhead of a new V8 generation; the 348 adopted the layout.

Good to know

  • The Mondial t was the first Ferrari equipped with power steering; it also gained an electronically controlled three-stage suspension and standard ABS.
  • To replace the timing belt, the entire powertrain had to be dropped out from below; conversely, the clutch at the very rear was easily accessible.
  • The Mondial's chassis formed the foundation for two-seaters all the way up to the Ferrari 360.

The t layout

The engine was now mounted longitudinally while the gearbox remained transverse, together forming a "t." This allowed a longer engine to be mounted lower in the chassis, significantly improving handling. The manual transmission featured a limited-slip differential and a twin-plate clutch. The engine and gearbox sat on a removable subframe that also carried the new suspension. This architecture became the standard for future mid-engine V8s, beginning with the 348.

Electronics and comfort

Engine management was handled by Bosch Motronic DME 2.5, later DME 2.7, with an individual ECU per cylinder bank; the K-Jetronic was phased out. Lubrication was switched to a dry sump. Later, the Valeo system became an option, allowing drivers to shift via the traditional gated H-pattern while the clutch was actuated electronically.

Bodywork

New front and rear fenders accommodated the wider track widths and featured rounder contours than earlier models with their rolled lips. The body was lengthened between the B- and C-pillars, the quarter window was extended, and the side air intakes were redesigned; as a result, the "t" appears noticeably longer in profile.
