Gilles Villeneuve was a Canadian racing driver. After catching Enzo Ferrari's eye in a McLaren in 1977, he flew to Italy in August; the diminutive Canadian reminded Ferrari of Tazio Nuvolari, and he offered him a contract. Of his 67 Formula 1 Grands Prix, he contested 66 for Scuderia Ferrari, finishing as World Championship runner-up in 1979. During final qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, he collided with Jochen Mass's car and died a few hours later.
