The 312 T is a Ferrari Formula 1 car that won races and titles starting in 1975. Mauro Forghieri developed it from the 1974 312 B3, penning clean, simple lines; the T stood for the transverse-mounted gearbox. The Tipo 015 flat-12 engine produced around 510 bhp, while the chassis combined a tubular frame with aluminum panels. The series claimed 27 race victories, four Constructors' Championships, and three Drivers' titles, making it the most successful design in Formula 1 history. It was replaced in 1981 by the 126 C, Ferrari's first turbocharged car.

Good to know

  • The victory in Monaco in 1975 was Ferrari's first there since Maurice Trintignant's triumph in 1955.
  • In 1979, Ferrari tested a semi-automatic gearbox with high-pressure hydraulics and steering-wheel buttons; Gilles Villeneuve drove it at Fiorano, but preferred the manual gearbox.
  • Ten years later, Ferrari returned to the semi-automatic gearbox in the 640.
  • In 1975, both World Championship titles went to the Scuderia for the first time since 1964.

Design and construction

The chassis was a combination of tubular frame and monocoque construction: a tub set into a frame of square-section steel tubing. At the front, a magnesium casting closed the monocoque; it housed the brake cylinders, shock absorbers, springs, suspension pickup points, and the anti-roll bar. At the rear, an end plate formed the connection to the engine. The transversely mounted gearbox, the "T" in the car's name, was developed by Forghieri alongside Walter Salvarani; it reduced the polar moment of inertia, drawing inspiration from the March 721X.

The first year

Development began in 1974 when it became clear that the handling problems of the 312B3 could not be solved. The car was neutral and lacked the persistent understeer of the B3. Niki Lauda tested it extensively over the winter. The 312T was a winner right from its debut at the BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone; Lauda also won the third Grand Prix race in Monaco and became World Champion with five victories during the season; his third place in Italy clinched the title early, with Clay Regazzoni taking the victory.
