Mauro Forghieri, born in Modena, was a mechanical engineer and Formula 1 designer for Scuderia Ferrari. In the spring of 1960, he started as an intern in the engine department. He is credited with introducing the first purpose-designed rear wings in Formula 1 at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix. He was also responsible for the 250 GTO, the P series, the flat-twelve engines, Ferrari's first turbocharged engine in the 126 C, and a prototype semi-automatic transmission in 1979. During his tenure, Ferrari won four drivers' and seven constructors' titles; he left the company in 1987.
