⚖ Compare

Built from 1955 to 1959, the Ferrari 410 Superamerica was a luxury grand tourer with a 4963 cm³ Lampredi V12 based on the engine of the 410 S race car. It initially produced 340 PS, rising to 360 PS in the final series. New features included a chassis with independent front suspension and the first five-speed gearbox in a Ferrari road car. With a claimed 163 mph, it was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest production car in the world. Because the price of 16,800 US dollars was more than double that of the Mercedes 300 SL, sales remained disappointing at 35 units.

Good to know

  • Each 410 Superamerica received custom coachwork, a few from Boano and Ghia, and most from Pinin Farina.
  • The Ghia "Gilda," a 1955 one-off, was created after the Lincoln show car Gilda Streamline X and featured prominent tailfins and a wraparound windshield; designed by Giovanni Savonuzzi.
  • The "Superfast," shown in Paris in 1956, combined the Superamerica chassis with the 24-plug racing engine of the 410 S and featured striking tailfins.
  • According to factory figures, the German source even cites 400 PS toward the end of production.

Series and wheelbase

Three series are distinguished. At the start of the first, the wheelbase was 2800 mm, but the final cars of the first series already used the version shortened to 2600 mm, which also characterized series two and three. The first two series of Pinin Farina coupés were very similar. Only the third series of 1959 was radically redesigned: without a panoramic rear window, with a new side profile, a lower radiator grille, and more deeply recessed, partially covered headlights, plus three louvers behind the side windows, which on some cars are covered with glass.

Engineering

The engine was based on the single-plug 410 S and displaced 4962.96 cm³. Three Weber 40DCF carburetors produced 340 PS at 6000/min. In 1957, Weber 46DCF3 carburetors replaced them, resulting in 360 PS in Series III—the final development of the long-block Lampredi V12. The chassis was new, with independent front suspension on coil springs, and for the first time, a Ferrari road car received a five-speed gearbox.

Special coachwork

One-offs were also built on the Superamerica chassis. The Pinin Farina "Superfast," also known as the "Superfast I," had a shorter wheelbase of 2600 mm, two-tone paintwork, and tailfins. The "4.9 Superfast," introduced in Paris in 1957, was its further evolution without the distinctive fins, finished in dark teal with a white roof.
