The Ferrari SF21 was presented in Maranello on March 10, 2021, and was an evolution of the SF1000. For the name, Ferrari returned to the SF-plus-year scheme for the first time since the SF16-H. Because the 2021 regulations cut downforce in the floor and rear-wheel areas, the aerodynamics were "radically" revised; development tokens were spent on the transmission and rear suspension. Charles Leclerc drove it alongside Carlos Sainz Jr., who made his Ferrari debut. Across 22 races, it yielded no wins, but secured 2 pole positions and 5 podiums.

Good to know

  • Internally, the SF21 ran under the name "Project 673".
  • Over the course of the season, Ferrari upgraded its hybrid energy store from a 400 V to an 800 V system.
  • Leclerc led the British Grand Prix with two laps remaining until Hamilton passed him on lap 50 of 52.
  • For the first time since 1992 and 1993, Ferrari went two consecutive seasons without a victory.

Chassis

The entire front section was refined; the new front wing once again relied on the outwash effect, as in 2019. New additions included a side flow guide on the outer edge of the bulkhead, a small flow vane in front of the tire, and a "cape" behind the nose directing air beneath the chassis. The aerodynamic "horns" in the front section carried four separate flow vanes. Ferrari halted development after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to focus on its successor.

Powertrain

Team Principal Mattia Binotto called it a transitional year, noting that the new engine was performing well on the dyno and had gained significantly over 2020. Addressing the SF1000's high drag was a key development goal. At the Russian Grand Prix, the new hybrid system was introduced in Leclerc's car, followed by Sainz's car at the Turkish Grand Prix: the energy store shifted from 400 V to 800 V, matching the competition. The gap to the top engine was said to no longer be dramatic.

Season summary

Compared to the disappointing 2020 campaign, Ferrari improved from 6th to 3rd in the Constructors' Championship. Leclerc claimed both pole positions, in Monaco and Azerbaijan. A race win still eluded the team. They came closest at the British Grand Prix, where Leclerc led with two laps to go until Hamilton passed him at Copse corner.
