The Ferrari SF1000 was unveiled on February 11, 2020, in Reggio nell'Emilia; the 1000 in its name refers to Ferrari's one-thousandth race, which, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately took place at the Tuscan Grand Prix in Mugello. The car was originally intended to debut in Australia, but the race was canceled, so its debut followed at the Austrian Grand Prix. Technically, it was an evolution of the SF90 with a lower center of gravity, narrower sidepod intakes, and a more compact rear end. On track, the season remained winless; Vettel nicknamed the car “Lucilla”.

Good to know

  • Internally, the SF1000 ran under the name "Project 671".
  • Following the 2019 season, the FIA investigated Ferrari's powertrain regarding fuel flow; no penalty was issued, but stricter regulations followed.
  • GPS analysis indicated that the SF1000 had lost 65 bhp compared to the SF90.
  • In the opening race, Leclerc took a surprise second place despite starting seventh.

Origins

Because the technical regulations for 2020 remained largely unchanged, Ferrari developed the SF1000 as an evolution of the SF90. Team Principal Mattia Binotto stated that they had taken every concept as far as possible. The center of gravity dropped because parts of the cooling system were installed lower, supplemented by more complex bargeboard components. The monocoque, bodywork, steering wheel, and brake discs are made of carbon-fiber-reinforced composites.

Powertrain

After the 2019 season, the FIA investigated Ferrari's power unit over suspicions of violating fuel-flow regulations. No penalty was imposed because the case could not be proven, but the FIA tightened the rules and introduced a second fuel-flow sensor. The SF1000 was slower as a result. The 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 is paired with a 120 kW electric motor; the eight-speed sequential transmission is operated via steering wheel shift paddles.

Season opener

Ahead of the season opener, Binotto admitted the team did not have the fastest package; a major update was planned for the third race in Hungary. In the first race, Leclerc qualified seventh and Vettel eleventh, but Leclerc finished second thanks to retirements and a time penalty for Hamilton. In the second race, both retired on the opening lap following a collision. In Hungary, both reached the third qualifying segment for the first time that season, with Vettel finishing sixth and Leclerc eleventh.
