The GTB Turbo arrived in 1986 as a two-liter turbocharged derivative of the 328, succeeding the 208 GTB/GTS Turbo. It was developed for Italy, where cars displacing over two liters were subject to a 38 percent value-added tax instead of the usual 18 percent. Development was headed by Nicola Materazzi, who had also overseen the 288 GTO. Compared to the 208 Turbo, the engine gained an intercooler and a new, water-cooled IHI turbocharger. It produced 254 PS and reached 253 km/h. A total of 1136 units were built.

Engine and cooling
The Tipo F106 N 000 evolved from the 208 Turbo engine, primarily through the addition of an intercooler and a new turbocharger. Displacement remained at 1991 cm³, but the cylinders received a Cermetal NC21 anti-friction coating, and a knock sensor could retard timing if hazardous pre-ignition occurred. It featured four overhead camshafts and two valves per cylinder; the mechanical Bosch K-Jetronic was carried over from the 208.
The IHI turbocharger
Instead of a KKK turbocharger, the new car featured a water-cooled IHI unit running at 1.05 bar of boost pressure. Materazzi knew it from the 288 GTO, where IHI had delivered the best throttle response; the materials and geometry of the compressor and turbine were more advanced than KKK's. Maximum torque arrived at an engine speed 700 rpm lower than in the 208 Turbo. In addition, water cooling and cooler intake air allowed for harder, more reliable use.
Differences from the 328
Aside from the engine, there were hardly any differences. The top-mounted intercooler from Behr required a redesigned engine cover along with air ducts and NACA ducts positioned ahead of each rear wheel arch. The rear bumper featured five ventilation cutouts. According to factory figures, the car reached 253 km/h; Quattroruote recorded 251 km/h.
