⚖ Compare

The 575M Maranello is essentially a revised 550 Maranello featuring subtly retouched bodywork by Pininfarina. It received a larger V12 with a displacement of 5.7 liters; the number 575 stands for the displacement, and the M for "modificata." A first for a Ferrari V12 was the automated F1 transmission from Graziano, which shifted faster than the traditional manual gearbox. In 2006, the 599 GTB replaced it.

Good to know

  • The F1 transmission shifted in 200 milliseconds compared to 300 with the manual and introduced launch control to Ferrari for the first time.
  • The number 575 stands for the displacement in centiliters, the M for "modificata."
  • The Superamerica's roof rotates 180 degrees backward in 60 seconds; Ferrari had it patented under the name "Revocromico."
  • Ferrari built 559 units of the Superamerica because, according to Enzo Ferrari's philosophy, there should always be one car less than the market demanded.

Engineering

Compared to the 550, there was a new interior, larger brake discs, a bigger engine, better weight distribution, and refined aerodynamics. The adaptive suspension is also controlled by the transmission to reduce pitching during gear changes. The 65-degree V12 features dry-sump lubrication, four valves per cylinder, a bore of 89 mm, and a stroke of 77 mm; it produces 515 PS at 7250/min and 588 Nm at 5250/min.

The F1 transmission

Both six-speed transmissions utilized the same single-clutch gearbox assembly, but the electro-hydraulic actuation of the F1 system made it 50 percent faster: 200 milliseconds instead of 300. With the F1 transmission, acceleration to 100 km/h is quoted at 4.2 seconds, with the manual requiring an additional 0.05 seconds. The system cost an extra 10,000 US dollars on a new car. Only 246 of the 2056 cars featured a manual transmission.

GTC package

From 2005 onward, the GTC package was available with Ferrari's fourth carbon-ceramic brake system made of carbon-fiber-reinforced silicon carbide from Brembo, following the Challenge Stradale, F430, and Enzo. The discs measure 15.7 inches at the front with six-piston calipers, and 14.2 inches at the rear with four-piston calipers. Added to this were more sportingly tuned suspension, an exhaust system with reduced backpressure, and bespoke 19-inch wheels.

Superamerica

Introduced in 2005, the Superamerica features an electrochromic glass roof with a carbon-fiber structure developed in collaboration with French glass specialist Saint-Gobain. It rotates backward on a single axis over the trunk, which remains accessible even with the roof open. The engine received the more powerful F133 G tune producing 540 PS, with Ferrari advertising it as the world's fastest convertible at 199 mph. Only 43 of the 559 cars had a manual gearbox.
