⚖ Compare

The Ferrari 248 F1 competed in Formula 1 in 2006 and takes its name from its engine: 24 represents the displacement in deciliters, 8 the cylinder count of the V8. It was an evolution of the F2005, with a wheelbase that remained unchanged thanks to a longer gearbox casing. It was the last Formula 1 Ferrari to feature single-keel technology, and Aldo Costa led the project because Rory Byrne served only in a consultancy role. Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa claimed 9 victories in 18 races, yet neither the drivers' nor the constructors' title was won.

Good to know

  • The rearview mirrors were positioned on the outer edge of the sidepods instead of alongside the cockpit.
  • At the start of the season, the car featured a three-element front wing; a two-element wing was introduced after the first three races.
  • Ferrari won 7 of the final 9 races, yet lost the constructors' championship to Renault by a margin of just 5 points.
  • In the race that concluded Schumacher's first career, he fought back from nearly a lap down after a puncture to finish in fourth place.

Season summary

The 248 F1 raced in every Grand Prix of 2006, unlike in earlier years when Ferrari started the season with the previous year's car. In Bahrain, two Ferraris locked out the front row, after which the Renault R26 was initially faster. Piston problems in Malaysia forced an engine change and a reduced rev limit. An aerodynamic update for the San Marino Grand Prix brought parity with Renault, and the one-two finish in the United States marked the turning point. The car went on to win 7 of the last 9 races, with Massa celebrating victories in Turkey and Brazil.

Technical details

Although the V8 was shorter than the V10 in the F2005, the wheelbase remained at 3050 mm, made possible by a longer gearbox casing. The engine reportedly produced 730 bhp at the beginning of the season, rising to around 785 bhp through revisions over the course of the year. For the French Grand Prix, a new rear engine cover was introduced with a more tightly tucked underside around the exhaust pipes.

Name and unveiling

With this name, Ferrari broke away from the F-and-year pattern used from 2001 to 2005, returning to a system reminiscent of the Ferrari 312. At the presentation on January 24, 2006, in Mugello, 30 journalists and around 200 guests were in attendance. Following the disappointing 2005 season, during which the team had spoken of the best Ferrari of all time, they chose to adopt a more modest demeanor and let results do the talking.
