The Ferrari 212 Inter replaced the 166 and 195 Inter gran turismos in 1951 and was unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show. That same year, two Vignale Coupés took a 1-2 finish at the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico with Taruffi/Chinetti and Ascari/Villoresi. It was also important for the brand because a 212 Inter Cabriolet became the first Ferrari with coachwork by Pinin Farina; Enzo Ferrari and Pinin Farina met halfway between Maranello and Turin for the occasion. The Colombo V12 displaced 2.6 liters and produced 150 PS.

Good to know

  • Autocar tested an early Ferrari 212: over 116 mph and 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 10.5 seconds, even with the engine limited to 6500/min.
  • The first Pinin Farina Ferrari was a 212 Inter Cabriolet with chassis 0177E; both sides had been too proud to take the first step.
  • A single 212 Inter, 0223EU, received the 2.7-liter V12 from the 225 S and a long Europa chassis; properly, it should be called 225 Inter or 225 Europa.
  • Ford bought the 212 Inter 0253EU for Henry Ford II to study on the way to the Thunderbird, Ford's answer to the Corvette.

Technical details

The chassis resembled that of the 125, with double wishbones up front and a live axle at the rear. The 2600 mm wheelbase was 4 inches longer than the 2500 mm wheelbase of the 212 Export. Both models shared the 2.6-liter V12 bored out to 68 mm, displacing 2563 cm³. The Inter produced 150 PS with a single Weber 36DCF, while the Export made 165 PS with three Webers. Improved cylinder heads later added 5 PS.

Coachbuilders

The 212 Inter was built in many body styles. Vignale built the most, with 37 cars: 26 coupés, 5 Berlinettas, 5 cabriolets, and one Spyder. Pinin Farina followed with 17, consisting of 15 coupés and 2 cabriolets; Ghia with 15, including 10 coupés and 4 2+2 coupés. Touring built 6, Ghia-Aigle 2, alongside a Berlinetta by Stabilimenti Farina and a cabriolet by Abbott. The coachwork by Pinin Farina was an important milestone for Ferrari, as Farina's sense of style would give the brand a major boost.

Two custom builds

The 0223EU, featuring the 2.7-liter engine from the 225 S and the long Europa chassis, remained a one-off; its coupé body was built by Vignale to a design by Giovanni Michelotti. The 0253EU also received the triple-carburetor 2.7-liter V12 and was bodied in Superleggera construction as the final Barchetta by Touring. The Ford Motor Company acquired it for Henry Ford II. Today, it resides in the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
