Luca di Montezemolo was invited by Enzo Ferrari to become his assistant in 1973 and became sporting director of the Scuderia in 1974; during this time, Ferrari won the Formula 1 World Championship with Niki Lauda in 1975 and 1977. In November 1991, Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli appointed him president of Ferrari, which had been struggling since Enzo Ferrari's death; he led the board of directors until 2014. He hired Lauda as a consultant and steered the road car business out of heavy debt back into profitability. Working alongside Jean Todt, Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship in 1999 and the Drivers' Championship in 2000, the team's first since 1979.
