⚖ Compare

The Purosangue is Ferrari's first four-door and first SUV-like model, unveiled on September 13, 2022. Ferrari avoids the term SUV, referring to it instead as an FUV, a Ferrari Utility Vehicle. Under the hood sits a V12 with a displacement of 6496 cm³ and 533 kW, with power sent to all wheels; the rear doors are rear-hinged, making access easier. The name refers to the oldest Italian horse breed, the Purosangue Orientale. To keep the car exclusive, no more than 3000 vehicles are to be built per year; in 2024, it received the Compasso d'Oro.

Origins

Development under the project code F175 began in 2017. Then-Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne had hinted at the project, and in September 2018 it was officially confirmed. A GTC4Lusso served as a development mule. In February 2022, images of the production car surfaced online, and a month later Ferrari released a teaser image. The Purosangue was unveiled on September 13, 2022, for the 2023 model year at the Teatro del Silenzio amphitheater in Lajatico.

Technical details

The Purosangue is built on the same platform as the Roma. The 6.5-liter V12 (F140 IA) produces 715 hp at 7750 rpm and revs to 8250 rpm. Ferrari claims 3.3 s to 100 km/h, 10.6 s to 200 km/h, and a top speed of over 310 km/h. The rear doors open forward against a fixed B-pillar. Dry weight according to Italian figures is 2033 kg, with a curb weight of 2180 kg.

Market

The Lamborghini Urus and the Aston Martin DBX are regarded as its competitors. Its price is more than 100,000 euros higher than that of the Urus and also exceeds that of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Because demand was so strong, Ferrari temporarily halted orders in November 2022; by May 2023, wait times were three years. Its share of Ferrari's total production is not to exceed 20 percent.

The name

In 2020, Ferrari attempted to trademark the name "Purosangue." However, an organization that supports young athletes and keeps them away from doping had held the registered and protected name since 2013. Ferrari argued that the name was barely being used and sought to have the registration revoked; the dispute went to court on March 5, 2021. Literally, "Purosangue" means pure blood, translating to thoroughbred. The Purosangue Orientale is considered the oldest Italian horse breed (royal decree of 1875).
