⚖ Compare

The 275 GTB/4, unveiled in October 1966 at the Paris Motor Show, was built on the chassis of the earlier 275 GTB and primarily introduced mechanical improvements. The Colombo V12 Tipo 226 received quad overhead camshafts (hence "4-Cam") and six Weber carburetors, with output rated at 300 hp. Visually, it can be identified by the hood bulge necessitated by the taller engine. The claimed top speed was 268 km/h. By 1968, 330 units had been built.

Good to know

  • Two electric cooling fans ahead of the radiator were standard on the 275 GTB/4; the body was available in steel or aluminum upon request.
  • Depending on the source, only 13 or 19 cars were built with aluminum coachwork.
  • It rolled on 14x7 Campagnolo magnesium wheels as standard; classic Borrani wire wheels were an optional extra.
  • In 2004, Sports Car International magazine ranked it seventh among the best sports cars of its decade.

Technical details

The Tipo 226 is a Colombo V12 displacing 3285.72 cm³. It was developed from the Tipo 213 of the earlier 275, which had two valves per cylinder. New additions included quad overhead camshafts and six Weber 40 DCN carburetors as standard. The valve angle was reduced by three degrees to 54°, making the heads more compact. Thanks to twin camshafts per bank, the valves could be positioned perpendicular to the shaft rather than offset. Lubrication was dry-sump with a large oil capacity of 16 liters.

Body and chassis

The body built by Scaglietti largely corresponded to the long-nose Series II model of the 275 GTB. The most noticeable difference is the bulge on the hood, which has sharply defined edges. From Series II, the GTB/4 adopted the torque tube between engine and transmission. Several detail improvements were also made to the cooling system, exhaust, and suspension, making the car primarily a technical evolution.
